In 1978 DKM produced a limited number of Macho Z's. There were to be 200 of these cars produced, but it's unclear just how many were actually built. These cars received the basic Macho treatment including the Macho paint scheme and giant graphics on the side, only reading Macho Z. Each of these cars received a production number.

In 1979 DKM changed the name to the Z29. The modifications remained the same. The paint scheme was changed a bit and the graphics were changed to read Z29. The identification number was also moved from the front fender to the sail panel. Options varried with each vehicle, depending on what the owner wanted and how much money he wanted to spend.

There were also a couple of Full Race versions of the Z29. These were identified as DKM Camaro Z29R's. "R" for Race.

This is 1979 DKM Camaro Z29 #12.

From Dennis Mecham Himself....
The Macho Z was the first Camaro package and as you mentioned it closely paralleled the Macho T/A program. At that time the Chevy's had the 350 and the Pontiac's the big 400. The Z29's were a visual replica of our SCCA Race Car that we raced on the west coast in the SCCA National events. The car set three track records in four races and qualified for the Runoffs in Atlanta. If I remeber correctly the cars were numbered individually by model. The Macho T/A's seperately from the Z's and so on. In the case of the Camaro's we did very few of them compared to the Trans Am's.
Other than the Z cars the only Chevy's we did were the Corvette L-82S cars. We did a few of those with good results. I believe Peter Frey of Motor Trend did an article on a black L-82S.

Dennis Mecham
